It can also be described as vertical members between panes of glass within window. It is a structural system whose primary purpose is to provide rigid support to the glazing of the window. Mullions are also used as an element in door frames to divide an opening and allow two separate doors.

Mullions can be made from a range of materials, options such as wood, aluminium and glass being mostly preferred Modern mullions are commonly made from steel, aluminium and timber. Stone is considered to be one of the oldest materials to be used as mullions dating back to 10th century Islamic, and Saxon architecture.
